Facebook offers no native video download button on its desktop website — and disabled right-click 'Save video as' for video specifically (right-click still works on images) to keep video consumption inside the platform. The third-party fallbacks are mostly web tools (fdown.net, SaveFrom, getfvid, etc.) that require pasting the video URL on their site — every URL gets logged on their server, the workflow is multi-step, and the sites are heavily ad-monetized with bait links. How to Download

Install Video Downloader Pro from the Chrome Web Store

Navigate to the Video Downloader Pro Chrome Web Store page and click "Add to Chrome." Confirm the installation. Pin the extension icon to your toolbar. The extension requires no Facebook account permissions and does not interact with the Facebook API — it reads only the video stream data that Facebook loads into your browser's video player.
Tip:You must be logged into Facebook in Chrome for the extension to work — Facebook requires a session to serve video content, even for public posts.

Navigate to the Facebook video post

Open Facebook in Chrome and find the video you want to download. Click on the video to open it — either in the feed lightbox or by clicking through to the video's own page. The video must be playing (or paused mid-play) in the Facebook player before the extension can detect the stream. For videos in the feed, clicking the play button is usually sufficient.
Tip:Facebook Reels are found in the Reels feed (facebook.com/reels) or embedded in the main feed. Click on a Reel to open it in the viewer and proceed the same way as a regular video.

Open the extension panel and detect the video

With the Facebook video visible and playing (or paused) in Chrome, click the Video Downloader Pro icon in your toolbar. The extension will scan the page and detect the video stream. Facebook typically offers two quality tiers: SD (standard definition, usually 480p) and HD (high definition, usually 720p or 1080p). Both options will be listed in the extension panel if the uploader provided HD.
Tip:Not all Facebook videos have an HD version. If only SD is listed, it means the video was originally uploaded or encoded only at standard definition.

Choose SD or HD and download

Select your preferred quality — HD for best quality or SD for a smaller file. Click "Download." The MP4 file will begin saving to your browser's Downloads folder. Facebook video filenames are typically numeric CDN identifiers; consider renaming the file after download for organization.
Tip:HD Facebook videos can be large files. For quick sharing or re-posting purposes where file size matters, SD is often more than sufficient for social media platforms that re-encode on upload anyway.

Verify the downloaded video

Open the saved MP4 in any video player to confirm it downloaded correctly and at the expected quality. Facebook videos are standard H.264-encoded MP4 files compatible with all major media players and editing applications. If the video is from a public Facebook Page, the download is clean with no overlays or watermarks from the extension.
Tip:If you downloaded a video from a Facebook Live replay, note that the encoding quality of live stream replays is often lower than regular uploaded videos — this is Facebook's encoding choice, not the extension's limitation.

Handle Facebook-specific edge cases (Reels, Watch, Live, Groups, embeds)

Each Facebook video surface has its own quirks worth knowing about:

  • Facebook Reels: Open from the Reels feed (facebook.com/reels) or from the main feed. Reels are vertical 9:16 short-form (up to 90 seconds), introduced 2022 as Facebook's TikTok / Instagram Reels competitor. Cross-posted Reels from Instagram (when accounts are linked) are the same CDN file as the Instagram version.
  • Watch videos: Facebook's curated video tab at facebook.com/watch. These are longer-form, often professional uploads from Pages and creators. Same download workflow as feed posts.
  • Live broadcasts (in progress): Cannot download while live (different streaming infrastructure). Wait for the broadcast to end and become a Live Replay (Facebook publishes it as a regular video typically within minutes of stream end), then download as VOD.
  • Group videos: Videos posted in closed or private Groups require Group membership AND active logged-in session. The extension uses your session — if you can view the video manually, you can download it. If you're not a member, neither you nor the extension can access the video.
  • Page embeds on external sites: Facebook video embeds on external websites (news articles, blog posts) use Facebook's iframe embed player. The extension detects the underlying Facebook stream regardless of the iframe wrapper, so downloads work on embeds the same as on facebook.com itself.
Tip:Facebook CDN URLs expire after a few minutes. If the extension detects a video but the download fails, refresh the Facebook page to get a fresh CDN URL, re-open the extension to re-detect, and download immediately. Don't leave detected videos sitting in the extension panel for long.

Supported Formats

  • MP4 SD — 480p (older uploads, mobile-quality)
  • MP4 HD 720p — common quality tier on most uploads
  • MP4 HD 1080p — Facebook's platform cap (when the creator uploaded at 1080p)

Limitations

  • Videos in private Facebook Groups require group membership and a valid logged-in session — the extension can only download content that Facebook loads into your browser. No privacy-bypass.
  • Facebook Live streams in progress cannot be downloaded as they play (different streaming infrastructure) — only completed live stream replays are downloadable.
  • Facebook caps native video uploads at 1080p. No video downloader can recover higher quality that Facebook doesn't store. Any tool advertising '4K Facebook downloads' is misleading.
  • Facebook CDN URLs expire within a few minutes — if the extension detects a video but the download fails, refresh the page to get a fresh URL and re-trigger detection.
  • Mobile Chrome on Android does not support extensions — use desktop Chrome (Windows, macOS, Linux).
