Save Twitter / X Spaces Recordings as MP3 or M4A

Three states a Space can be in, each with different capture behavior:

• Live Space (currently happening): URL is twitter.com/i/spaces/[id]. The audio is streaming live to anyone joined. Video Downloader Pro can capture this stream as it plays.
• Recorded playback (within 30 days of ending): URL is the same; X shows a 'Listen to Replay' button. Audio plays from X's CDN as on-demand HLS. The extension captures this normally.
• Expired (over 30 days, or host deleted): URL returns 'This Space is no longer available'. No stream to capture. Use the X search to find if anyone else uploaded it as audio elsewhere (some attendees archive and post separately).

To find a Space URL: from someone's profile, click Spaces tab → past or upcoming Spaces appear there. From a Tweet linking to a Space, click the Space card.

For a live Space: click Listen live. X joins you to the audio stream as a listener (your name appears in the listener list visible to host and other listeners — there's no anonymous listening option in 2026's X Spaces).

For a recorded replay: click Play recording. X loads the HLS audio manifest and starts playback.

Either way, the audio starts streaming through your browser. Video Downloader Pro detects this as it loads. Three practical notes:

1. For live captures, you must stay joined for the full duration you want to capture. If the Space is 90 minutes and you want all 90 minutes, you stay joined the whole time. The extension captures what's actually streamed to your browser.
2. For replays, the full audio is available from start. No need to listen through; just trigger the extension and download the complete stream.
3. Volume slider position doesn't matter. The audio download captures the unfiltered stream from X's CDN, not whatever's being mixed to your speakers. Muting your output during long live captures is fine.

Click the Video Downloader Pro extension icon. For a Space, you'll see:

• HLS audio stream — usually labeled with the duration (e.g., '1h 47m, AAC 64kbps') or 'audio/mp4'
• Twitter analytics beacons — skip these

Click the audio entry. The extension downloads the HLS segments serially and muxes them into a single audio file. Your output options:

• M4A (AAC): the native format X serves. Smaller file, perfect audio quality (no re-encoding). Compatible with all modern players, podcast apps, audio editors.
• MP3: if you select MP3 in the extension's format dropdown, it transcodes from AAC to MP3 during download. Slightly larger file, marginally lower quality (re-encoding loss), but universally compatible with older devices.

For Space lengths: a 90-minute Space at AAC 64kbps produces ~40 MB M4A file or ~80 MB MP3 file. Download takes 1-3 minutes on a 100 Mbps connection.

Once download completes, the M4A or MP3 lands in your Downloads folder. Verify:

1. Open in VLC or any audio player. Confirm the duration matches the Space's actual length (some live captures truncate if the Space ends before download triggers).
2. Check audio quality. Listen to a 30-second sample. X Spaces stream at 64kbps which is conversation-clear but not music-quality — expect some quality loss vs the original speakers' microphones.

Post-download workflows worth setting up:

• Transcription: upload to Otter.ai, Whisper, Descript, or Rev — all handle M4A directly. Most produce a searchable transcript in 2-3x real-time (a 60-minute Space transcribes in ~25 minutes).
• Podcast feed: if you host your own podcast feed (e.g., Buzzsprout, Transistor), upload the M4A as a private episode for your archive listening.
• Citation: for journalism or research, archive the M4A alongside metadata (URL, host handle, date, list of speakers, time the Space ended). The metadata is critical because the X URL itself will 404 within 30 days.
• Audio editing: open in Audacity (free) or Reaper to extract specific quote segments, remove silence, or normalize volume for clearer listening.
