Download Podcast Audio as MP3 — Web Players + Exclusive Shows

Before reaching for the extension, check if the podcast is open RSS. If yes, you don't need any tool — the MP3 is publicly available.

1. Find the podcast's website (Google '[show name] podcast official site')
2. Look for individual episode pages — most podcast sites link to the MP3 directly (right-click 'Save Audio As' on the play button)
3. Or use the RSS feed: find the RSS URL in the podcast's footer or About page → open in any browser → each episode lists its MP3 URL
4. Apple Podcasts URL trick: if you have the Apple Podcasts URL, sometimes you can find the RSS feed via getrssfeed.com or castos.com/tools — gives you direct MP3 access

If the MP3 is available directly: download it that way. Cleaner files (no re-encoding from a streaming player), faster, and works for the entire show catalog.

If the podcast is Spotify-exclusive (no RSS), Apple Podcasts Subscriptions exclusive, or any other platform that locks content to its app/web player:

1. Open the podcast episode in your browser (open.spotify.com for Spotify, podcasts.apple.com for Apple, etc.)
2. Start playing the episode — wait a few seconds for the audio stream to load
3. Trigger Video Downloader Pro — click the extension icon
4. Look for audio streams in the detected list — labeled as audio/mp4 (M4A), audio/mpeg (MP3), or HLS audio segments
5. Click the audio stream → extension downloads the segments and muxes into a single audio file

For Spotify Web Player specifically: Spotify uses obfuscated streaming that some extension versions struggle with. If the standard capture doesn't work, the workaround is screen-recording the audio (lower quality but functional).

When the extension shows multiple format options for the same audio:

• M4A (AAC): typically the native format streamed to your browser. Smaller file size for the same quality. Compatible with all modern podcast apps, music players, and computers.
• MP3: if you select MP3 in the extension's format dropdown, it transcodes from AAC to MP3 during download. Slightly larger file, marginally lower quality (re-encoding loss), but universally compatible with older devices.
• OPUS (rare): some platforms serve Opus codec; less universally compatible but smaller files. Convert to M4A or MP3 if your player doesn't support it.

For typical podcast files:

• 60-minute podcast at 64kbps M4A: ~28 MB
• 60-minute podcast at 128kbps MP3: ~55 MB
• 60-minute podcast at 192kbps M4A (rare): ~85 MB

For users building substantial podcast archives, file naming matters more than file format. After download:

• Rename immediately: use format like ShowName_2026-06-21_EpisodeTitle.m4a — date prefix means files sort chronologically in any folder view
• Folder structure: create per-show folders (~/Podcasts/Show A/, ~/Podcasts/Show B/) so the archive stays browseable
• Metadata tagging: use a tool like MusicBrainz Picard or Mp3tag to add ID3 tags (show name, episode title, episode number, date) — most modern podcast players use these to display episodes nicely in their library view
• Transcription: for shows you actually want to reference later, upload to Otter, Whisper, Descript — transcribed shows become searchable in ways audio alone never is

For high-volume podcast saving: set up a watched Downloads folder that auto-tags and moves files (Hazel on Mac, File Juggler on Windows, or a simple shell script). The first time you set this up takes 30 minutes; saves hours over months.
