How to Download Twitter / X Videos to Your Computer

Save any public tweet video or GIF directly to your device in full quality — no watermarks, no sign-ups, and no third-party websites required. Works entirely inside Chrome.

Last updated: March 6, 2026

Twitter / X hosts millions of videos every day, from breaking news clips to viral memes, but the platform does not offer a native download button for most users. Video Downloader Pro adds a one-click download button directly into the Twitter interface, letting you save any public video or GIF to your computer without leaving the page. The extension works with the Chrome browser on desktop and handles all quality selection automatically.

How to Download

1

Install Video Downloader Pro from the Chrome Web Store

Open Chrome and visit the Video Downloader Pro Chrome Web Store page. Click "Add to Chrome," then confirm by clicking "Add extension" in the popup. The extension icon will appear in your Chrome toolbar. Pin it for easy access by clicking the puzzle-piece icon and selecting the pin next to Video Downloader Pro.
Tip:You do not need a Twitter account to download public videos, but you must be on the tweet page for the extension to detect the video.
2

Navigate to the tweet containing the video

Open Twitter/X and find the tweet with the video you want to download. Click on the tweet to open its detail view — this is important because the video must be fully loaded in the page for the extension to detect it. You can also paste the tweet URL directly into the address bar if you have it. For GIFs, they appear as looping animations in the tweet timeline; click on the GIF to expand it before downloading.
Tip:The extension works on the main Twitter/X feed, individual tweet pages, profile pages, and search results. If the video does not appear detected, try clicking into the tweet's permalink page.
3

Click the extension icon and detect the video

Once the tweet page is loaded and the video is visible, click the Video Downloader Pro icon in your Chrome toolbar. The extension panel will open and automatically scan the current page for downloadable media. It will list all detected video streams, including available quality options such as 720p and 1080p. For GIF-based tweets, it will detect the underlying MP4 file that Twitter uses to serve the animated content.
Tip:Twitter serves GIFs as silent MP4 files internally — the extension downloads the MP4 version, which plays as an animation in most media players.
4

Select your preferred quality and download

Choose your desired resolution from the quality list — 1080p for the highest quality or 720p for a smaller file size. Click the "Download" button next to your chosen quality. The file will be saved to your browser's default download folder as an MP4 file. For GIFs, the downloaded file will be an MP4 that loops silently, identical to how Twitter displays it.
Tip:If you want to save both qualities, download 1080p for archiving and 720p for sharing. Most social platforms re-encode uploaded videos anyway, so 720p is usually sufficient for re-sharing.
5

Verify the downloaded file and manage your library

Open your Downloads folder (or press Ctrl+J in Chrome to view recent downloads) and locate the saved MP4 file. Play it in any media player such as VLC, Windows Media Player, or QuickTime. The file will play without watermarks and at the full resolution you selected. Rename the file to something descriptive before moving it to your media library — Twitter-generated filenames are not human-readable.
Tip:For bulk downloading, open each tweet in a separate tab and trigger the extension in each tab before downloading. The extension remembers the last-used quality setting between sessions.

Supported Formats

  • MP4 (720p)
  • MP4 (1080p)
  • GIF (as MP4)

Limitations

  • Twitter Spaces audio recordings are not supported — Spaces uses a separate streaming infrastructure that the extension cannot access.
  • DRM-protected or premium subscriber-only video content is excluded and cannot be downloaded.
  • Private account tweets require you to be a logged-in, approved follower before the video is accessible to the extension.
