Can I Undo an Unfollow or See My Unfollow History on Instagram?

Instagram itself does not provide an undo button or a native unfollow history. However, Instagram Unfollow Pro tracks every account you unfollow through the extension and stores them in an unfollowedAccounts list. This gives you a searchable history and the ability to re-follow individual accounts — though there is no one-click bulk undo, by design. Here is what the tracking looks like, what you can do with it, and why selective re-following is actually the better approach.

The unfollowedAccounts History List

Every time you unfollow an account using Instagram Unfollow Pro — whether manually through the extension panel or via a bulk operation — that account is added to the unfollowedAccounts tracking list stored in the extension's local storage. The list includes the username and display name for each entry, making it easy to search. The history is retained indefinitely and persists across browser sessions, so you can look back weeks or months later to see what you have unfollowed.
 • Each unfollowed account is logged with username, display name, and timestamp
 • History is stored in Chrome's local extension storage — private to your browser
 • No limit on history size — the full list is retained until you clear it manually
 • Accessible from the History or Unfollowed tab inside the extension panel
 • Searchable by username — useful if you remember a partial handle

Re-Following an Account After Unfollowing

From the unfollowed history list, each account has a Re-Follow button that appears directly in the row. Clicking it sends a follow request to that account. For public accounts, the follow is immediate — they are back in your following list right away. For private accounts, the follow request goes into pending status and you will appear in their follow requests list. They must approve the request before you show up as a follower again.
 • Public accounts — Re-follow is instant, no approval needed
 • Private accounts — Re-follow sends a follow request; requires the other person's approval
 • Deactivated or deleted accounts — The re-follow attempt will fail gracefully; the extension marks the entry as unavailable
 • Accounts that have blocked you — You will not be able to re-follow; the request will return an error

Why There Is No Bulk Undo Feature

It might seem useful to have a one-click undo that re-follows every account you unfollowed in a session. In practice, this would be counterproductive and potentially harmful to your account. Sending a large number of follow requests in a short window triggers Instagram's spam detection just as aggressively as mass unfollowing does. Additionally, blindly re-following everyone defeats the purpose of the cleanup. The extension is deliberately designed for selective re-following: you use the history to find specific accounts you want back, and re-follow them individually or in small batches over time.

Re-Following Private Accounts: What to Expect

When you unfollow a private account and then re-follow them, Instagram does not automatically restore the previous following relationship. Your follow request appears in their notification queue and they need to manually accept it. Some users do not check follow requests regularly, and some will simply decline or ignore the request. This is worth knowing before you unfollow private accounts — it is not always reversible on your timeline. This is one reason why the whitelist/protect feature is especially important for private accounts you care about: protect them first so they never get unfollowed accidentally.
 • Re-follow request goes into their pending follow requests — not automatic
 • They will receive a notification that you sent a follow request
 • If they decline, you will need to send another request if they ever make their account public
 • The time between unfollowing and re-following does not affect the outcome — it is always a fresh follow request

Best Practice: Protect First, Unfollow Second

The safest approach to bulk unfollowing is to use the whitelist proactively rather than relying on the unfollow history to fix mistakes. Before running any bulk operation, spend a few minutes in the Protected tab marking any account you might want to re-follow later. It is far easier than searching the history after the fact. For accounts you are genuinely unsure about, add them to the whitelist first, run your bulk unfollow, then review the whitelist and remove anyone you decide you actually do not need to follow. This way you are always in control without the friction of processing re-follow requests. See also: the ban risk of bulk unfollowing for how to pace sessions safely.
