PhD candidate in computational linguistics, year 3 of dissertation, $24K/year stipend
The Challenge
Student needed AI assistance for literature review (summarizing papers), code refactoring, and dissertation chapter drafting. ChatGPT Plus + Claude Pro + Perplexity Pro = $60/month = $720/year. On a $24K stipend, $720/year in AI tools was 3% of total income — unaffordable. But trying to do PhD work without AI was non-viable in 2026.
The Approach
Set up Anthropic + OpenAI API keys (free trial + pay-as-you-go). Used Prompt Anything Pro with BYOK across both providers. Built 12 academic templates: 'summarize this paper in 200 words', 'explain this methodology in plain English', 'find the 3 weakest claims', 'identify the gap this paper fills vs my dissertation', 'rewrite this paragraph in active voice without changing meaning', etc.
The Outcome
Monthly AI cost: $60 → $3.20 (actual usage at API pricing × ~400 queries/month). Annual savings: $682.40 (~3% of stipend recovered). More importantly: switching between Claude (for nuanced argument analysis) and GPT-4 (for code work) became frictionless. Dissertation chapter draft velocity doubled. Student successfully defended 6 months early.
