Does Instagram Show Screenshots of Stories in 2026?

Quick Answer

No. Instagram does NOT notify the Story poster when you screenshot their Story — and hasn't since June 2018, when the brief screenshot-notification test was removed. This applies to all Story content (photos, videos, polls, music stickers, Highlights). The poster will see that you VIEWED the Story (in their viewer list, for 48 hours after posting) but they have no way to know you screenshotted it. The only Instagram screenshot Instagram notifies anyone about is a disappearing photo or video in a direct message.

  • Stories: NO screenshot notification (since June 2018)
  • Highlights: NO screenshot notification (same policy as Stories)
  • Feed posts and Reels: NO screenshot notification
  • Disappearing DM photos/videos: YES — sender is notified via in-conversation icon (the ONLY exception)
  • Screen recording: NOT detected for any content type in 2026 (with possible exception of disappearing DMs on some iOS versions)

Stories: No Screenshot Notification (Since 2018)

Instagram tested screenshot notifications on Stories for a brief period in early 2018, then removed the feature in June 2018 after user backlash. Since then, the policy has been stable: NO notification when you screenshot a Story. This applies to every type of Story content and every account type (personal, creator, business).
  • Photo Stories: NO notification when screenshotted
  • Video Stories: NO notification when screenshotted
  • Polls, questions, sliders, quiz stickers: NO notification when screenshotted
  • Music stickers: NO notification when screenshotted
  • Location and mention stickers: NO notification when screenshotted
  • Story poster sees that you VIEWED (in viewer list for 48h) but not that you screenshotted

Highlights: Same As Stories — No Notification

Highlights are saved Stories — same content type, same screenshot behavior. When you screenshot someone's Highlights, the account owner has no notification. The viewer list for Highlights doesn't even include who viewed (unlike active Stories), so the poster has even less information about Highlight engagement.
  • Highlights screenshots: NO notification
  • Highlights viewer list: NOT shown to the account owner (different from active Stories)
  • You can screenshot Highlights freely — including saved-from-Stories and uploaded-as-Highlight content
  • Same behavior on private accounts (if you follow them) and public accounts

The One Exception: Disappearing DM Photos and Videos

The ONLY Instagram content where screenshots ARE notified to the sender is disappearing photos and videos sent in direct messages — the kind set to vanish after one view or 24 hours. When you screenshot one of these, the SENDER sees a small camera icon next to the message in their DM thread, indicating you screenshotted. This is the only screenshot Instagram surfaces. Regular DM photos, voice messages, text messages, and links DO NOT trigger any notification.
  • Disappearing DM photo/video: SENDER IS NOTIFIED via in-conversation icon
  • Regular DM photo (non-disappearing): NO notification on screenshot
  • DM text messages: NO notification on screenshot
  • Voice messages: NO notification on screenshot of the player UI
  • Links shared in DM: NO notification on screenshot

Does Screen Recording Show Up?

Same answer as screenshots: NO, except for disappearing DM media. Instagram's notification system hooks into the iOS/Android screenshot system call. Screen recording is a separate OS-level capability and Instagram does NOT detect screen recordings for any content type as of 2026 — including disappearing DM media in some cases (behavior has been inconsistent across iOS versions). Screen recording is the workaround many people use for content they want to preserve from Stories that vanish in 24 hours.
  • iOS screen recording: NOT detected by Instagram for Stories, Highlights, feed posts, Reels
  • Android screen recording: NOT detected by Instagram for any content type
  • Disappearing DM screen recording: previously triggered notification on iOS (inconsistent); behavior may vary by iOS version
  • Browser-based screen recording (desktop): NEVER triggers any notification

What About Third-Party Story Viewer Apps?

Apps that claim to let you view Stories anonymously (without appearing in the viewer list) exist but vary in reliability. Most reputable ones do work — they fetch publicly accessible Story content via scraping rather than viewing it through your Instagram account. Since these don't view through your account, you don't appear in the viewer list AND screenshots don't trigger any notification (there's no notification to trigger). These tools have nothing to do with the screenshot question.
  • Anonymous Story viewers don't expose 'screenshot' notifications because they don't view through your account
  • These tools work by scraping public Story content (only works on public accounts)
  • Reputable ones: StorySaver, Glassagram (don't endorse any specific one — research before using)
  • Avoid any tool that asks for your Instagram password — that's a phishing red flag
