FAQ
Can I Use PlugMonkey on Firefox or Safari?
Quick Answer
PlugMonkey extensions ship through the Chrome Web Store and work natively on Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers — Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. Firefox and Safari use different extension architectures (Firefox WebExtensions, Safari Web Extensions) and are not currently supported; a Firefox build is on the roadmap. Mobile Chrome (Android/iOS) doesn't support extensions at all — that's a Chrome limitation, not a PlugMonkey one.
- Officially supported: Google Chrome and all major Chromium browsers — Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi — installed from the Chrome Web Store.
- Not supported: Firefox (different WebExtensions API surface) and Safari (Apple Safari Web Extensions, requires Xcode and Apple review). Firefox is on the roadmap; Safari is not currently planned.
- Mobile browsers (Chrome for Android, Chrome for iOS, Safari Mobile) don't support extensions at the browser level — there's no PlugMonkey workaround for that.
- Edge users must enable "Allow extensions from other stores" in edge://extensions before installing from the Chrome Web Store; Brave/Opera/Vivaldi install directly.

Fully Supported Browsers
These browsers support Chrome extensions natively and can install PlugMonkey directly from the Chrome Web Store.
- Google Chrome — Primary platform. Fully tested and supported. All features work as designed.
- Microsoft Edge — Built on Chromium. Supports Chrome Web Store extensions. Enable "Allow extensions from other stores" in Edge settings, then install from the Chrome Web Store.
- Brave — Built on Chromium. Supports Chrome Web Store extensions natively. Install directly from the Chrome Web Store with no additional configuration.
- Opera — Built on Chromium. Supports Chrome extensions via the "Install Chrome Extensions" add-on (available from Opera's add-ons page) or directly from the Chrome Web Store.
- Vivaldi — Built on Chromium. Supports Chrome Web Store extensions natively.
Not Currently Supported
These browsers use different extension architectures and cannot run Chrome extensions.
- Firefox — Uses its own extension format (WebExtensions/Manifest). While the underlying APIs are similar, a separate Firefox version would need to be developed and published on Mozilla's Add-ons marketplace. This is on our roadmap but does not have a scheduled release date.
- Safari — Uses Apple's Safari Web Extensions format. Safari extensions require Xcode development and must go through Apple's review process. Safari support is not currently planned.
- Mobile browsers — Chrome for Android and iOS do not support browser extensions. This is a Chrome limitation, not a PlugMonkey limitation.
Installing on Edge, Brave, or Opera
If you use a Chromium-based browser other than Chrome, here is how to install PlugMonkey extensions.
- Microsoft Edge — Go to edge://extensions, enable "Allow extensions from other stores" at the bottom of the page, then visit the Chrome Web Store and install normally
- Brave — Visit the Chrome Web Store directly in Brave and click "Add to Brave" (the button may still say "Add to Chrome" — this is normal)
- Opera — Visit the Chrome Web Store in Opera. Opera may prompt you to install the Chrome Extensions support add-on first. After that, install PlugMonkey extensions normally.
- Important note — While Chromium-based browsers support Chrome extensions, minor visual or behavioral differences may occur. If you experience issues, try Chrome for the most reliable experience.
Will Firefox Support Come?
Firefox support is on our roadmap. The challenge is that Firefox uses a different extension API in some areas, requiring development effort to port and test each extension separately. We prioritize Chrome because it holds roughly 65% of the global browser market, meaning the vast majority of our users are Chrome-based. If Firefox support is important to you, let us know through our contact page — user demand helps us prioritize the roadmap. In the meantime, if you primarily use Firefox but can occasionally use Chrome or a Chromium browser, installing a Chromium browser alongside Firefox specifically for PlugMonkey extensions is a practical workaround.
