FAQ

How Does the Search Function Work in X Unfollow Pro?

X Unfollow Pro includes a real-time search bar that lets you find specific accounts within your following list by name, username, or bio content. The search is case-insensitive and returns results instantly as you type, without needing to reload or rescan your following list. It works on both the free and Pro tiers and combines seamlessly with the extension's filter system for more precise targeting.

Where the Search Bar Lives and How to Use It

The search bar is located at the top of the X Unfollow Pro management panel, above the list of accounts you follow. Click into the search field and start typing — results update in real time with each keystroke. You do not need to press Enter or click a search button. When you clear the search field, the full following list is immediately restored. The search is designed to be fast and frictionless, requiring no additional scanning of your account since the following list data is already loaded into the extension.
  • Real-time results — The list filters instantly as you type, with no delay or scan required
  • Case-insensitive — Searching for 'john', 'John', or 'JOHN' all return the same results
  • Clears with one click — An X button inside the search field resets the view to the full following list
  • Available on free and Pro tiers — Search is not a Pro-gated feature; all users have access

What the Search Matches Against

The search function checks each account in your following list against three fields simultaneously: the account's display name, their username (handle), and their bio. An account appears in search results if any of these three fields contains your search term. This makes the search genuinely useful for finding accounts by topic or interest, not just by knowing an exact name or handle.
  • Display name — The full name shown on an account's profile (e.g., 'John Smith')
  • Username / handle — The @handle used to mention the account (e.g., 'johnsmith')
  • Bio text — The profile description the account has written about themselves; searching for 'crypto' or 'marketing' will surface accounts whose bio mentions those terms
  • Partial matching — You do not need to type the full word; 'mark' will match 'marketing', 'marketer', and 'Mark Johnson'

Combining Search with Filters

Search and filters work together in X Unfollow Pro — you can have both active at the same time. For example, you could apply the non-followers filter to reduce your following list to non-reciprocal accounts, then use the search bar to find a specific person within those results. Alternatively, search first for accounts in a particular niche (by bio keyword), then apply the inactivity filter to see which of those niche accounts have gone dormant. The two systems are additive: the visible list always reflects accounts that satisfy both the active search term and all active filters simultaneously. See the full filter guide for all available filter options.
  • Filters narrow first, search narrows further — Any active filters apply to the base list; search then refines within that filtered set
  • Or search first — Apply a search term, then turn on filters to add conditions on top of the search results
  • Both reset independently — Clearing the search does not reset your active filters, and disabling a filter does not clear your search term
  • Useful for targeted bulk actions — Find a group of accounts by bio keyword, select them all, then bulk unfollow just that segment of your following list

Practical Use Cases for Search

The search function is most useful when you know something about the accounts you want to find but cannot easily browse to them in a list of hundreds or thousands. Common scenarios include finding a specific account before protecting it with the whitelist, identifying all accounts in a niche you no longer follow (search their common bio keyword and unfollow the inactive ones), or quickly confirming whether you still follow a specific person. For detailed guidance on running a full cleanup session — including using search and filters together — see the bulk unfollow on X guide.
  • Find before protecting — Search for an account by name to locate it quickly in a large list, then click Protect before running a bulk operation
  • Niche cleanup — Search a topic keyword (e.g., 'NFT', 'crypto', 'fitness') to surface all accounts in that space, then filter by inactivity to remove dormant ones
  • Verify follow status — Quickly confirm you still follow (or no longer follow) a specific person after a cleanup session
  • Selective unfollow by company or brand — Search a company name to find all accounts associated with that brand in your following list
